I think Pollan’s point he is trying to make is that cooking shows have changed a lot since he was a child.

Page 5 paragraph #1

In this paragraph Pollan is talking about how Julia Child used to empower women when it came to cooking. It got women to enjoy cooking. It wasn’t about cooking a meal quickly or cutting corners, it was about taking your time to make a meal you were proud of and that was enjoyable. This is something I agree with because my grandmothers and great grandmothers on my mom’s all baked and cooked. It is something they used to always do. My grandmother watched cooking shows and copied them. It is something my grandmother enjoys so much in her high school year book under he “ambitions” section she put she wanted to be “another Betty Crocker.” Most of my family has learned to cook through being shown by other family members. I think my grandmother was the only one to really watch “How to” cooking shows. My mom isn’t a really big cook so she never has much interest in watching them. My younger sister and I used to watch “How to” baking videos on youtube when we were younger. We enjoyed the decorating process.

The Food Network is a channel my sister and I used to watch a significant amount of time. We really enjoyed the competition shows. We would each pick a person we thought was going to win. We watched a lot of the baking competitions, because at the time my sister was obsessed with baking and decorating cakes and cupcakes. There was one called Cupcake Wars that we would watch whenever we had a chance. This show had three rounds like most of the cooking shows. They were judged on their presentation and taste of the cupcakes. My sister and I would also rate the appearance of the cupcakes. Normal “How to” baking shows aren’t namely on tv anymore so we never really watched those. The competition shows are more entertaining as well which added to the appeal.

This paragraph talks about more shows that I would watch. “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives” is a show I watched a lot with my dad. We would like to see all the delicious foods that Fieri would eat. My dad would make the occasional comment that “we should eat there sometime.” I would also watch “Man Vs. Food” which is a show about exactly what the title says. A man would go to different eateries and try their food challenges from the spiciest wings or the worlds biggest burger. These shows aren’t about how to make the perfect French onion soup with all the ingredients step by step, they are just to show you what the soups look like and then have someone taste them and tell you how good they are.

Another type of show my sister and I would watch is Cake Boss or Cupcake Wars. These shows are more on the drama side of tv. There is always some type of conflict that haws to be resolved in each episode. My sister enjoyed the cake boss show so much we actually went to the store from the show (isn’t as exciting as you would think).
